Online Literacy Course – More Than Just Reading and Writing
posted on July 31, 2017
The Independent Learning Centre is Ontario’s designated provider of distance education. It is an excellent place to brush up on your literacy, get your G.E.D, or work towards a post-secondary diploma. The courses do not require in-person attendance and can be done at your own speed. Most courses cost $40 for provincial residents and take at least 4 months to complete.
Out of province and international students are able to apply, although the fees are higher ($250-$500)
The eligibility criteria point the focus of the Independent Learning Centre to those who have had difficulty getting to post-secondary school on their own.
As stated on their Web site, the literacy course syllabus is broken down into:
- How Literacy Can Make me a Better Family Member (part A and B)
- How Literacy Can Make me a Better Citizen (part A and B)
- How Literacy Can Make me a Better Employee
- Demonstrating Literacy (part A and B)
The first unit of the course is the most interesting as it sets out to resolve family conflict through a self-improvement model. By understanding how to communicate better you will be able to communicate with your family better.
Other high school courses are also available. A brief background of these courses is available on their website
