CBC Documentary – Indictment: The Crimes of Shelly Chartier

A recent CBC documentary looks at the ways that the Gladue Courts operate in the Canadian judicial system. The Gladue decision means that the courts take “systemic factors which might have brought Indigenous offenders before the court.” It ensures that Judges consider alternatives to incarceration in cases involving Indigenous offenders.
Despite consistently being affirmed by the Supreme Court, the courts have failed to be implemented nationwide. This comes in the wake of findings that Indigenous people in Canada are frequently failed at nearly every level of the Canadian justice system.
