Health Canada’s Guide to becoming a non-smoker
posted on January 17, 2018
With National Non-Smoking Week on the horizon, it’s important to begin to seek out information about how you can take action on putting together a plan to quit smoking.
Health Canada’s guide entitled On the Road to Quitting is a 56 page PDF document which outlines specific ways that quitting smoking can improve your health and overall quality of life.
It is meant as a guide for anyone who smokes, even if they are not yet ready to quit; “No matter how near or far you are from your goal of quitting smoking, this booklet will help you figure out what you want to do and provide the information you need to move forward.”
While it is primarily targeted at cigarette smokers, the information is valuable to anyone who consumes tobacco in any form and wants to end their addiction to nicotine.
It is important to begin by examining your relationship to smoking. What does it do for you; when do you smoke; where do you smoke; and what feelings might you associate with smoking.
Beginning with these deceptively difficult questions will allow you to begin to recognize what smoking means to you and your life. Being as honest with yourself about these emotions will be very helpful as you continue your journey towards a smoke-free life.
The guide also frames quitting not as a single act, but as a series of small battles that are won by the days, hours, and minutes that you are trying to stop smoking. Seeing your quitting journey as a process will make it easier to keep your head up and continue.
When or if you do slip, it’s important that you not view it was a failure; look at how far you have come rather than how far you need to go.
