Assisted Dying - Legal

As of 2016, in certain medical situations, doctor-assisted death (also referred to as doctor-assisted suicide) is now legally available to patients in Canada that meet certain criteria. The Supreme Court of Canada’s ruling to strike down the federal law prohibiting medical assistance in dying has made it possible for Canadians who are facing an untreatable and irreversible diagnosis to have their physician assist them with ending their life, to avoid prolonged pain and suffering. Before a doctor can administer end-of-life care, there are many criteria that must be met, and strict procedures and protocols are in place. There are different options for end-of-life procedures, as well as where they can be carried out (for instance, in a hospital, care facility, or at home). The decision to consider doctor-assisted death is not an easy one. If you, a friend, family member or loved one would like more information on doctor-assisted death, we have the information and resources you are looking for. You are not alone.
