Self-Esteem & Self-Worth

Your self-esteem, or self-worth, refers to your overall judgment of yourself. This is an emotional evaluation - and can be either a positive or negative one. Many factors can go into how a person feels about themselves, including ethnic, cultural, social, and religious ideals, as well as certain personal experiences. Self-esteem can change over time, either improving with maturity or becoming worse. Having a low self-esteem, or a negative view of yourself can lead to mental and emotional stress, causing mental health symptoms such as depression or anxiety. If you are looking for information, guidance, community resources or support for low self-esteem, or to help you face mental health challenges that are related, we are here to help.

Self-esteem

The Costs and Causes of Low Self-worth

This report brings together the findings of research projects about the nature, origins and consequences of variations in self-esteem among young people. It considers the potential role of self-esteem in intervention with vulnerable young people and examines the nature of self-esteem. It explores to what extent self-esteem is a quality that some individuals possess more of than others and whether it is a state that fluctuates. The report also highlights the difficulties in relation to measuring changes in self-esteem and how it can be modified through interventions. Most notably, this report outlines what is known about self-esteem and the consequences of high versus low self-esteem, recognising that high self-esteem does not necessarily have only positive outcomes.

Shame and the Origins of Self-Esteem

A Jungian approach

Shame is one of our most central feelings and a universal human characteristic. Why do we experience it? For what purpose? How can we cope with excessive feelings of shame? In this elegant exposition informed by many years of helping people to understand feelings of shame, leading Jungian analyst Mario Jacoby provided a comprehensive exploration of the many aspects of shame and showed how it occupies a central place in our emotional experience. Jacoby demonstrated that a lack of self-esteem is often at the root of excessive shame, and as well as providing practical examples of how therapy can help, he drew upon a wealth of historical and cultural scholarship to show how important shame is for us in both its individual and social aspects. This Classic Edition includes a new foreword by Marco Della Chiesa.

SELF-ESTEEM

Walking Tall

Positive self-esteem is the starting point of all achievements. If you are not able to believe in yourself, how can you expect other people to do so? Self-esteem is not what other people think you are - it is the way you think you are. It is built from birth and, contrary to what many people imagine, can be changed consciously or unconsciously at any stage of life. Positive self-image is very important, because all your actions depend on it. If it is high, your output increases in direct proportion. Positive self-esteem leads to confident actions and right decisions. Negative self-esteem leads to confident actions and right decisions. Negative self-esteem leads to lack of self-confidence, timidity and procrastination during decision-making. The real you is a unique being with enormous potential for experiencing and extending love, both toward yourself as well as to others. As you self-esteem grows, this real person emerges. You begin to take risks and not be afraid of failure; you are not as concerned about the approval of others; your relationships are more rewarding; you pursue activities that bring you joy and satisfaction; and you will make a positive contribution to the world. Most importantly, high self-esteem brings you peace of mind... you truly appreciate the person you are. Every person has the capacity for high self-esteem. The question is, are you ready to make a commitment to increasing your self-esteem? You must have the spirit to accept yourself as a bundle of possibilities and undertake the most interesting game in the world - making the most of yourself.
