Mental/Psychological Abuse

Abuse can take several forms, including mental, psychological or emotional abuse. It is a pattern of behaviour from one person to another and can take place in any setting or relationship. The abuser may be a spouse, parent, sibling, or extended family member. Often times, the abuser feels justified in their actions and is not concerned that the abuse will be reported. Mental abuse can range from subtle actions, such as name-calling, ignoring or excessively criticizing, to more severe actions such as threatening violence, abandonment, or threatening to withhold food or basic care that a person needs. Mental abuse may result in anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder. Any form of mistreatment that results in mental, emotional or physical harm can be considered a form of abuse. Do you have concerns about mental abuse within your own family or that of a loved one? Or do you wish to report a friend whom you think may be in need of help or protection, but don’t know who to call? Or would you like to seek care and treatment following mental abuse?
