Elder Abuse

Elder abuse can take several forms, including neglect, physical harm, verbal, sexual, emotional, or financial abuse. It is a pattern of behaviour from one person to another involving a senior or older adult that results in mental, emotional, financial or physical harm. The abuser may be a spouse, sibling, adult child of the elder, neighbor or extended family member. Or, the abuse comes from a person that an elder relies on, within a retirement home or nursing home, or someone such as a meals or transportation assistance provider. Laws are in place under the criminal code of Canada to protect any member of society from various forms of abuse, and this includes seniors. Do you have concerns of violence or abuse towards an elder within your own family, or that of a loved one?
