Literacy

Literacy is very simply defined as the ability to read and write, as well as use arithmetic. Over time, the term literacy has expanded, and now typically also refers to the ability to use and understand numbers, images, computers, or other means of language and communication. For instance, a person who is not very comfortable using a computer may refer to themselves as not being “Computer Literate”. Literacy skills are acquired - meaning they must be learned. According to the Canadian Literacy and Learning Network, 42% of Canadian adults between the ages of 16 and 65 have low literacy skills, and less than 20% of people with the lowest literacy skills are employed. Help for low literacy is available, and some Canadian government funding is available to pay for certain programs. Are you struggling with your own ability to read or write? Or are you looking for literacy programs and services for friends, family, co-workers or students in your neighbourhood or community? The Kinjunxion network can help.
